Due to the good reputation of the West Coast Ultrasound Institute, students come from all across the US, eg Oregon, Colorade, Utah, Tennessee, etc. There are also students who travel up to two hours every day from Palm Springs in order to study at the Institute. Some students also come from abroad, as, for example, Canada, the Philippines, South Africa and Nigeria.

In summer 2004, the two partners West Coast Ultrasound Institute and Präha Educational Institute agreed upon the following possible areas of cooperation:

  • Student exchange
  • Organising further training for teachers and lecturers at the two institutes
  • Promoting teacher exchange between the two schools
  • Exchanging teaching programmes and methods, as well as ideas and experiences

Certified Physiotherapist with the opportunity of studying for a Bachelor of Physiotherapy, NL
Teaching method: Problem-Based Learning (PBL)

Since 2002, the Präha Training Centre for Health Professions in Horrem (Kerpen) has been offering a double qualification in physiotherapy. It combines the German qualification as a Certified Physiotherapist with a Dutch "Bachelor of Physiotherapy". Our Dutch partner school, the Hogeschool Zuyd in Heerlen, fully recognizes the German three-year physiotherapy course, which means that only one more year at Heerlen has to be added to obtain the Bachelor's degree. Moreover, there is the opportunity of studying for another one and a half years to obtain a Master's degree.

Problem-Based Learning, the teaching method applied, is very common in the Netherlands. Students organize their learning processes themselves, which also includes continuous self-evalutation. Classes are designed to meet the requirements of cross-subject and practice-oriented learning. This means that students learn to analyse a topic or a problem, do literature research and evaluate it in order to subsequently compare possible solutions and select and implement them.
Here teachers take on the role of tutors and advisors. Students are expected to show more initiative with regard to organising and designing their learning processes. Teachers teach the physiotherapeutic techniques immediately associated with the topics worked on in the groups. Thus this kind of vocational training prepares students also for those situations in their professional life where they have to find solutions on their own or where team work is required.
